Short answer

For most small businesses, a realistic monthly SEO budget starts somewhere between $500 and $1,000. That’s the most common range in a survey of 439 SEO providers, and our own ongoing SEO starts at $1,000 a month.

The right number depends on your trade and how much of the Milwaukee area you want to reach. The shape your website is in matters too. Here’s what the common price ranges look like and what moves them.

What SEO Usually Costs

SEO gets sold three ways: a monthly retainer, an hourly rate, or a one-time project. The numbers below come from Ahrefs, which surveyed 439 SEO providers and last updated its findings in August 2024. They’re national figures, not Milwaukee-only, so treat them as a starting point.

Monthly Retainers

The most popular retainer in the survey was $501 to $1,000 a month, charged by about one in five providers. A retainer covers ongoing work like page updates, technical fixes, content, and reporting, so it suits businesses that want SEO handled month after month.

Hourly Consulting

The most common hourly rate was $75 to $100. Hourly work makes sense when you have someone in-house who can make the changes and you mostly need direction, reviews, or a second opinion.

One-Time Projects

The most common project fee was $2,501 to $5,000. That usually buys one defined piece of work. Think an audit with fixes, a set of new service pages, or cleanup after a redesign.

What Changes the Price for a Milwaukee Business

Two Milwaukee businesses can get very different quotes for what sounds like the same service. Four things explain most of the gap.

How Competitive Your Trade Is

A plumber or roofer fights for some of the most expensive searches in the city, while a landscaper or auto shop usually faces less pressure. More competition means more pages and content, and a longer wait for results.

How Much of the Area You Want

Ranking in one neighborhood is a smaller job than reaching Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, and the suburbs beyond. Each area you add needs its own reason for Google to show you there.

The State of Your Website

A site that only needs fixes costs far less than one with thin pages, broken tracking, or a structure that has to be rebuilt. An audit is the quickest way to find out which camp you’re in.

Who Does the Work

If your own team or developer makes the changes, you pay for strategy and review. If the agency writes, builds, and fixes everything, the monthly cost goes up, but so does how much gets done.

This is the scoping we do before quoting any Milwaukee SEO work. You know what the number covers before you agree to it.

What Search Traffic Is Worth in Milwaukee

One useful way to judge an SEO budget is to look at what the same clicks would cost as Google Ads. Here are average cost-per-click figures and monthly searches for common Milwaukee searches, pulled from Google Ads data in October 2026.

  • Plumber Milwaukee: about 880 searches a month, at roughly $49.49 per click.
  • Roofing Milwaukee: about 390 searches a month, at roughly $49.36 per click.
  • HVAC Milwaukee: about 590 searches a month, at roughly $33.10 per click.
  • Electrician Milwaukee: about 210 searches a month, at roughly $19.22 per click.
  • Kitchen remodeling Milwaukee: about 170 searches a month, at roughly $17.79 per click.
  • Dentist Milwaukee: about 1,900 searches a month, at roughly $10.93 per click.
  • Landscaping Milwaukee: about 390 searches a month, at roughly $5.39 per click.
  • Auto repair Milwaukee: about 480 searches a month, at roughly $4.49 per click.

Take the plumber example. Buying 100 visitors a month from that one search would cost close to $4,950 in ad spend. That bill repeats every month you keep paying.

Organic rankings don’t charge by the click. That’s why a few thousand a year on SEO can look small next to one busy ad campaign.

That doesn’t make ads a bad idea. Ads work the day they go live, and SEO takes months. Many businesses use both, but the click prices show why ranking on your own matters most in the trades where clicks are priciest.

Expensive Doesn’t Mean Measurable

A high price isn’t proof of good work. Before he started Rise, Christos saw contractors paying $5,000 a month to agencies that couldn’t say which channel produced the last week’s calls.

Judge SEO by what it returns, not only by what it costs.

Whatever you spend, ask how the results get tracked. You should be able to see the calls, the forms and the searches behind them. If you can’t, you can’t tell what you’re paying for.

Red Flags in an SEO Quote

Watch for guaranteed first-page rankings, long contracts with no way out, link packages sold by the hundred, and reports that only show traffic. None of those tell you whether the work brings in customers.

How to Set Your Own SEO Budget

1. Work Out What a New Customer Is Worth

Start with the average value of a job and how many new customers you can handle in a month. A roofer and a dog groomer can justify very different budgets.

An SEO budget pays for the work behind rankings: listings, pages, content and tracking.

2. Check How Many People Search for What You Do

If only a few dozen people search for your service each month, a big retainer is hard to earn back.

3. Fix the Basics First

Broken tracking, missing service pages, and technical problems are cheaper to fix than to work around. An audit tells you whether you need a project first or can go straight to ongoing work.

4. Give It Enough Time

Plan for at least six months before judging the results. SEO builds slowly, and stopping after eight weeks usually means paying for the setup without seeing the payoff.

What We Charge at Rise Marketing HQ

Our ongoing SEO starts at $1,000 a month. If you run a trade business, we break down what SEO costs for contractors in a separate guide. Where a client lands above that comes down to the page count, the writing involved, and whether map-pack work is part of it. Looking after a single Business Profile on its own is $1,299 a month and up.

Every engagement runs month to month, so you can stop when it stops making sense. Before any of that, Christos writes or reviews a free 24-hour audit that tells you what he would fix first.

SEO Cost Questions

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

Usually, when people search for what you sell. The clicks you earn don’t carry a per-click charge, and good pages keep working after the work is done. If almost nobody searches for your service, other marketing may pay back faster.

Is $500 a month enough for SEO?

It can be for a small business in a quiet market, especially if your team handles some of the work. In crowded trades like plumbing or roofing, $500 often only covers the basics.

Should I pay for SEO or Google Ads?

Pay for Google Ads if you need calls this week, and for SEO if you can wait a few months for leads that don't bill by the click. Many Milwaukee businesses run ads while SEO builds.

Can I do SEO myself?

Some of it, yes. You can keep your Business Profile updated, ask customers for reviews, and write clear service pages. Hiring help tends to pay off on the technical side and on call and form tracking.

Why do SEO quotes vary so much?

Because the work varies. One quote may cover a few page edits while another includes content, technical fixes, and local SEO. Ask each provider exactly which pages and tasks the price includes.
