Why Audit First

You Can't Fix What You Haven't Measured — An SEO Audit Is the Starting Point for Every Successful Campaign

Most businesses that come to us have tried SEO before. They've published blog posts, built a few backlinks, maybe hired a previous agency. Nothing moved. The frustrating reality: without an audit, SEO work is guesswork. You're optimising pages that might have canonicalization issues, building links to pages that have indexing errors, or creating content for keywords you're already being penalised for competing internally.

An SEO audit is the diagnostic step that eliminates guesswork. It identifies every technical issue preventing Google from properly crawling and indexing your pages, every on-page problem reducing your relevance for target keywords, every gap in your backlink profile compared to the sites ranking above you, and every keyword your competitors rank for that you don't.

In our experience, the average Milwaukee business website has 8–15 technical SEO issues that actively suppress rankings — most of which were unknown to the business owner because they aren't visible when you browse the site normally. They only appear when you crawl the site the way Google does.

Crawl Errors — Pages Google Can't Read
404 errors, redirect chains, and blocked resources that prevent Google from accessing key pages
Duplicate Content — Splitting Your Own Authority
Multiple URLs serving the same content, cannibalizing each other's ranking potential
Indexing Issues — Pages Not in Google
Pages excluded from Google's index that should be ranking — often due to incorrect noindex tags
Thin Content — Insufficient Relevance Signal
Pages with under 300 words of useful content that Google treats as low quality
Broken Internal Links — Lost Link Equity
Internal links pointing to 404 pages, wasting the PageRank that should flow to live pages
Everything Fixed — Baseline Established
After the audit, every issue is documented, prioritised, and handed over with a clear implementation roadmap
What We Audit

Six Areas Covered in Every SEO Audit — Nothing Left Unexamined

A thorough audit doesn't just check one thing. Rankings are determined by dozens of interconnected factors — our audit covers all of them and shows you exactly how they interact.

⚙️

Technical SEO Audit — How Google Sees Your Site

We run a full Screaming Frog crawl of your site and cross-reference it with Google Search Console data. Every URL is checked for: crawl errors, redirect chains (301, 302, redirect loops), HTTP status codes, canonical tag correctness, robots.txt and sitemap configuration, HTTPS implementation, Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP), mobile usability issues, structured data errors, and hreflang configuration for multi-language sites. Issues are ranked by severity and impact on organic performance.

📄

On-Page Audit — Every Ranking Signal on Every Page

Every page on your site is reviewed against on-page SEO benchmarks: title tag length, format, and keyword placement; meta description quality and CTR optimization; H1 presence and keyword usage; heading hierarchy logic; keyword density and LSI term coverage; content word count vs competitors; image alt text; internal link anchor text; URL structure; and page-level schema markup. A colour-coded report shows exactly which pages need the most urgent attention.

🔗

Backlink Profile Audit — Authority, Quality, and Risks

We pull your full backlink profile from Ahrefs and SEMrush, then analyse: total referring domains and domain authority distribution; anchor text profile (natural vs over-optimised); toxic and spammy links that may be suppressing rankings; competitor link gap — sites linking to competitors that aren't linking to you; and local citation count and NAP consistency. Any links requiring disavowal are flagged with a file ready for Google Search Console submission.

📑

Content Gap Analysis — Keywords You Should Be Ranking For

We compare your keyword rankings to your top 3–5 competitors to identify: keywords your competitors rank in the top 10 for that you don't appear for at all; keywords where you rank on page 2 or 3 but could realistically reach page 1 with targeted optimisation; and topic clusters your competitors have built that you haven't addressed. This analysis forms the basis of your content marketing roadmap. See our Content Marketing service for how we execute it.

📊

Google Search Console Analysis — What Google Is Telling You

Google Search Console contains data that most business owners never look at. We analyse: index coverage report (which pages Google is and isn't indexing, and why); search performance data (which queries trigger your pages and how often users click); Core Web Vitals report (which pages have user experience issues flagging in Google's system); manual actions (penalties applied to your site); and crawl stats (how efficiently Google is crawling your site). This data shapes the audit's prioritisation.

🔎

Competitor SEO Analysis — What's Working for Them

Understanding why your competitors outrank you is as important as finding your own issues. We analyse your top 3 local or national competitors' domain authority, backlink profiles, content strategies, keyword targets, page structures, and technical SEO scores — then identify the specific gaps between your site and theirs. The competitor analysis section of the audit tells you exactly how far you are from the top position and what it will realistically take to get there.

FAQ

SEO Audit Questions Answered

Real questions from Milwaukee businesses — answered directly.

Ask Us Directly
Our initial SEO audit is included free with any enquiry — we review your site before the first strategy call so the conversation is useful from minute one. For a standalone comprehensive audit report with full documentation, competitor analysis, and implementation roadmap, pricing starts at $500 for standard sites. We discuss scope during the initial call based on your site's size and complexity.
No. Every issue in our audit reports is written in plain English with a clear explanation of what the problem is, why it matters, and specifically what needs to be done to fix it. Where developer changes are required, we provide implementation briefs that can be handed directly to any developer or WordPress administrator. If you have questions about any finding, we explain it on the follow-up call.
A full audit should be done at the start of any SEO engagement and then annually. However, Google makes 5,000+ algorithm updates per year, and sites change constantly — new pages are added, plugins are updated, redirects break. We recommend a lighter quarterly technical health check (checking for new crawl errors, indexing changes, and Core Web Vitals shifts) between full annual audits.
Our primary tools are: Screaming Frog SEO Spider (site crawl), Google Search Console (index coverage, CWV, manual actions), Google Analytics 4 (organic traffic analysis), SEMrush (keyword gap and competitor analysis), Ahrefs (backlink profile and domain authority), and PageSpeed Insights (Core Web Vitals). We use the data from all six together — no single tool gives a complete picture.
You can choose. Some clients take the audit report and implement the fixes themselves or with their existing developer. Others use it to work with Rise Marketing HQ on an ongoing SEO retainer where we implement every fix, track ranking improvements, and continue optimising monthly. There's no obligation to continue past the audit — but most clients find the audit surfacing issues they didn't know existed, and decide implementing the fixes with professional oversight is worth it.
A manual action (Google's term for a manual penalty) appears in Google Search Console under Security & Manual Actions → Manual Actions. If your site has one, it will be identified in the audit. Most manual actions are for unnatural link building or thin/duplicate content. We document the issues, help you clean up the violation, and draft a reconsideration request to Google. Most manual actions are resolved within 30–60 days of proper remediation.
